John Mueller confirmed on Friday that Google will begin to roll out its Page Experience Update to desktop sites in February 2022.
The Page Experience Update went live for mobile devices in August 2021.
As of March, Google will be watching the following page experience signals for websites being accessed by users of both mobile devices and desktops:
- Core Web Vitals, which are metrics of page loading, interactivity and stability:
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), which should occur within 2.5 seconds of the page starting to load
- First Input Delay (FID), which should be less than 100 ms
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), which should score less than 0.1 as measured by Google

- Pages served over HTTPS
- Data sent over the internet by HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is protected using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption.
- Google Chrome now tags websites using HTTP as "not secure", which users of course find offputting.

- No intrusive interstitials - think: popups which:
- Open on pages that a user reached via Google search
- Open without the user clicking on anything
- Have content unrelated to that of the page proper
- Cover the all or most of the page or require scrolling to avoid
- Are not legally or ethically required (e.g., for age verification).
- Below is an example of an intrusive interstitial:
Note that mobile sites will still have to pass Google's Mobile Friendliness Test.
