Google adds sustainable travel features to Search and Maps

New updates to Google Maps and Search make it easier to find lower-carbon alternatives to flying and driving: trains, buses and walking routes.

In Maps, Google will show sustainable options next to driving routes when travel times are comparable. This feature will be available shortly in Amsterdam, Barcelona, London, Montreal, Paris, Rome, Sydney and 10 other major world cities. (No US cities yet.)

Google is also expanding the ability in Search to find information on long-distance train and bus routes, with schedules, ticket prices and booking links directly on the results page. This feature is available for trains in 38 countries and buses in15 countries (both including US).

In 2023 Google began to provide train route suggestions in response to queries about flights on Search, and in coming months this feature will also be rolled out to Google Flights. Also on Google Flights, you can now see - and filter results by - estimates of carbon emissions for most flights.

Emissions estimates provided by Google's Travel Impact Model (TIM) are now publicly available through a developer API , a Google Sheets add-on, and a calculator on the TIM website.
