Google to Keep Chrome, Android but Share More Data
Alphabet (GOOGL.O) shares were up 7.2% yesterday on the news, because investors consider Chrome and Android to be critical, strategic parts of Google's business .Judge Amit Mehta also ruled that Google can continue making big payments - $20B last year - to Apple for using Chrome on its devices, which in turn caused AAPL.O shares to rise 3%.
Google's having to share more data with OpenAI and other Ai rivals will create opportunities for those companies to take market share from Google, but probably not immediately.
In a blog post yesterday Google expressed concerns about additional data sharing adversely impacting the privacy of users - and an appeal of parts of the decision can likely be expected. Quoting:
"Now the Court has imposed limits on how we distribute Google services, and will require us to share Search data with rivals. We have concerns about how these requirements will impact our users and their privacy, and we’re reviewing the decision closely..."
