Working with its "Preferred Software Partner 2021" Italy-based RoomCloud, Airbnb has since July been developing an API that can enable channel managers and distribution platforms to use multiple rate plans - e.g., refundable and non-refundable - for Airbnb properties, a feature that's planned to be most attractive for hotels, and also moves Airbnb's business closer to an OTA model.
RoomCloud's primary product is a Channel Manager which the company claims can update portals through XML connection, automatically manage rates and availability of hotel rooms via online sales channels, and synchronize importing of reservation distribution channels.
Airbnb currently has one hotel live on the new API, and plans to add more soon.
In a complementary move, Airbnb is also renewing investment in and expanding room inventory of its metasearch and last-minute-booking property HotelTonight across the Americas, Caribbean, Europe and Australia.
Will Airbnb achieve world domination of the lodging sector anytime soon? Stay tuned.
